A sensational four-goal display from James Matthews inspired Mersey Valley to a comprehensive 6–0 victory over Wythenshawe Reserves on Saturday, as Valley produced the perfect response to the previous weekend’s disappointment.

Matthews was simply unplayable, scoring four times in 43 minutes as Valley combined attacking ruthlessness with an excellent team performance to record their second clean sheet in three games.

From the opening whistle, Valley looked sharp. Owen Adams and Pete Greenwood provided a strong platform at the heart of the defence, while Louis Quinn, Lucas Boaler and Sam Deering quickly established control in midfield.

The breakthrough arrived after 15 minutes.

Quinn produced an excellent pass to release Matthews, who raced through and made no mistake with the finish to give Valley a deserved lead.

The visitors remained in the contest for much of the opening half, but Matthews struck again deep into stoppage time with a goal created almost entirely by his own determination.

The striker closed down the Wythenshawe goalkeeper, forcing the ball high into the air. Matthews then produced a superb first touch before beating the recovering defenders to the loose ball and poking home for 2–0.

If Valley finished the first half strongly, they started the second in devastating fashion.

Just three minutes after the restart, Matthews completed his hat-trick in spectacular style. Mike Woolley delivered from the right and Matthews controlled before producing an audacious overhead kick which looped over the goalkeeper.

It was a stunning finish — but there was still more to come.

On 58 minutes, Matthews collected possession inside his own half and drove directly at the Wythenshawe defence. He continued his run, weaving his way through the opposition before finishing to complete an extraordinary four-goal individual performance and put Valley 4–0 ahead.

His afternoon was done shortly afterwards, replaced by Joel Riley with 25 minutes remaining and leaving the pitch with a perfect four-goal haul and a 10/10 performance.

Matthews has now scored 12 goals this season and continues an outstanding start to the campaign.

Valley weren’t finished. Deering added the fifth on 79 minutes with a superb free-kick from the left, curling his effort brilliantly into the top corner.

The sixth arrived five minutes from time. Riley’s powerful run into the penalty area was halted illegally and, although the resulting penalty was initially saved, Usieme reacted quickest to the rebound to complete the scoring.

The goals will inevitably grab the headlines, but this was much more than an attacking performance.

Valley were organised and disciplined throughout, with Adams and Greenwood outstanding together at centre-back and the midfield trio of Quinn, Boaler and Deering combining quality on the ball with an excellent work rate without it.

Alex Gorst and the defence secured the clean sheet, while Valley finished with 54% possession, 22 attempts and 10 shots on target.

Most importantly, it was exactly the reaction manager Jon Hudson had demanded following the previous weekend’s 6–5 defeat at Pilkington.

Six goals. A clean sheet. A complete team performance.

And at the centre of it all, an unforgettable Matthews Masterclass.
