Lady Luck Deserts Valley on Opening Day

Mersey Valley began their Cheshire Football League Division Two campaign with a frustrating 3–0 defeat away at Warrington Rylands Development on Saturday.

The final scoreline was a harsh one on Valley, who created more than enough opportunities to take something from the game, but two defensive errors in the opening 25 minutes left Jon Hudson’s side with an uphill battle.

Valley actually started brightly and should have taken the lead after just three minutes. Ted Palmer-Atkins was sent clean through on goal, but his effort went wide of the target.

James Matthews was next to threaten on 10 minutes, producing an excellent run before his eventual shot was comfortably saved by the Rylands goalkeeper.

Having started positively, Valley then found themselves behind on 20 minutes when a defensive error was punished by the hosts.

Five minutes later it was 2–0. Another defensive error presented Rylands with an opportunity and they were clinical again, leaving Valley two goals down despite having enjoyed plenty of the attacking play.

The visitors continued to push and create opportunities rather than allowing the scoreline to take control of the game.

That pattern continued after the break, with Valley spending significant periods in attacking areas but struggling to find the finish their play deserved.

The closest they came arrived on 68 minutes. Matthews struck a powerful effort which crashed against the underside of the crossbar and somehow stayed out.

Four minutes later substitute Rourke Neal went close to reducing the deficit when his effort clipped the outside of the post.

Valley continued searching for a way back into the contest, but Rylands put the game beyond doubt with a third goal four minutes from time.

The 3–0 scoreline ultimately told only part of the story but the home side deserved their victory after being more clinical in the final third. Their captain, Callum Warburton particularly impressive.

Valley finished the afternoon with 25 attempts on goal compared with Rylands’ 10, created 13 chances, had 24 touches inside the opposition penalty area and forced 10 corners. Seventeen of Valley’s 25 efforts came from inside the penalty area, but only six of the overall attempts were on target.

It was that lack of ruthlessness, combined with the two first-half defensive errors, which proved decisive.

There were still positives for Hudson and his coaching staff to take from the opening weekend, particularly in the number of attacking situations the side were able to create.

There were also five competitive debuts, with Charlie Hill, Alex Holroyd, Kobi Royle, Wilson Usieme and Rourke Neal making their first appearances for the club, while Louis Quinn and Junior Omorogbe made their second debuts after returning to Valley.

Alex Holroyd was named Star Man after an impressive league debut at left-back.

It was ultimately a disappointing opening result for Valley, but also a performance which offered plenty to build on. The immediate challenge is clear: cut out the errors, be more clinical in the final third and make the most of the attacking opportunities being created.
