MATCH REPORT

Mersey Valley ended their season on a massive high with a huge victory away at the champions St Helens Town, and still may end up playing in League One next season.

With rumours circulating that three teams will be promoted from League Two, it’s now a waiting game for Mersey over the summer months.

Owen Adams heads home his 20th goal of the season

They arrived at the fabulous Ruskin Sports Village with four straight wins, and their confidence showed as they scored after 2 minutes – Evans’ corner headed home by top scorer Owen Adams – his 20th of a superb season.

The home side responded well. Cook through on goal saw his shot brilliantly blocked by Phillips.

Joel Riley kept his cool to make it 2-0

With the home side looking dangerous, it was Mersey who struck next – Adams with a ball breaking the line for Riley to race through, keep his composure and beat the keeper to make it 2-0 and silence the big crowd gathered to watch their team lift the League 2 trophy.

Before the game St Helens’ previous 25 games had seen 21 victories, 4 draws and 0 defeats, but Valley saw the half out well with the home side not able to create any real clear chances.

The second half began with a huge moment, Jordan Downing bursting through, one-on-one with the keeper, but his shot was straight at Jenkinson when it was easier to score.

A worrying moment followed, Phillips was fouled as he jumped for a catch and landed heavily, fears he was knocked out were eased, and he was able to continue.

A huge performance from youngster Sam Phillips

The key moment of the game arrived on the hour, Phillips again jumping to catch a ball and he appeared to be hit in the stomach by a St Helens player which started a melee in which Owen Adams was headbutted – Ewan Roach also got involved and clashed with a St Helens player pushing him in the face.

The referee somehow only produced one card – a red one for Roach, which was the correct decision; however, the St Helens player should also have seen red, which frustrated the Mersey bench.

St Helens capitalised straight away, but it took a huge slice of luck to deflect a tame shot past Phillips – with 30 minutes still to play it was going to be a huge ask for the 10 men of Mersey Valley.

Taafe replaced Woolley, and the team reshaped and defended magnificently to the constant long-ball threat from the home side, who, despite launching ball after ball into the box, couldn’t really threaten Phillips or the superb Jordan Downing, who won most of his headers.

Jordan Downing showed all his quality with an outstanding performance

Adams thought he’d got a third but was adjudged to have pushed his defender, but the full-time whistle was greeted with cheers, the Valley players even clapped off by the 200+ St Helens crowd.

The home side, who have been far and away the best team in the league this season, then lifted the trophy, and we hope that we will be seeing them again next season.

MAN OF THE MATCH

SAM PHILLIPS

A huge performance from the 19 year old who stood up so well to being targeted in the second half. Didn’t make one mistake collecting the barrage of long balls and made a couple of crucial blocks in the first half.

Special credit to Jordan Downing as well – his first 90 minutes since January and his return to the pitch where he suffered a serious knee injury last season – he was magnificent – marked the St Helens danger man Diggle out of the game and after the red card he brilliantly marshalled the back line and won every header.
