MATTHEWS DOES THE DOUBLE! JAMES CLAIMS OCTOBER PLAYER AND GOAL OF THE MONTH AWARDS

It’s been an outstanding October for Mersey Valley striker James Matthews, who has capped off a sensational run of performances by claiming both the Player of the Month and Goal of the Month awards.

Eight goals in just three league appearances during October, including a remarkable four-goal haul against Wythenshawe Reserves, have made Matthews one of the standout performers in the Cheshire Football League Two this season.

And with a stunning individual effort against Wythenshawe also earning him the Goal of the Month award, it’s a thoroughly deserved double celebration for the Valley number nine.

PLAYER OF THE MONTH – JAMES MATTHEWS

October began with Matthews producing a superb hat-trick away at Pilkington in an extraordinary 6–5 encounter. Despite the disappointing result, his performance demonstrated the confidence and goalscoring instinct that have made him such an important player for the Amber Army.

Seven days later came a performance that will live long in the memory.

Against Wythenshawe Reserves at Banky Lane, Matthews was simply unplayable, scoring four times in a magnificent 6–0 victory. His movement, finishing and relentless desire to get on the scoresheet were central to a result that gave the entire squad a huge lift.

And just when it looked as though October couldn’t get any better, Matthews delivered another decisive moment against Haydock.

With Valley trailing 1–0 deep into stoppage time, Matthews struck in the 92nd minute to secure a deserved point in a fiercely contested encounter between two excellent sides.

Three appearances. Eight goals. Countless memorable moments.

But beyond the goals, it’s James’s attitude, work rate and commitment to the team that have made his contribution so valuable.

GOAL OF THE MONTH – A MOMENT OF MAGIC AGAINST WYTHENSHAWE

As if winning Player of the Month wasn’t enough, Matthews has also claimed October’s Goal of the Month award for his brilliant individual effort in the 6–0 victory over Wythenshawe Reserves.

In a match packed with outstanding attacking football, one moment of individual quality stood above the rest.

A sensational solo goal that showcased everything Matthews has brought to the Valley attack this season – skill, confidence, determination and the composure to produce something special. It was a goal that deserved recognition and a fitting highlight of an unforgettable individual performance.

His overhead kick in the same game was also close to winning the award!

A MONTH TO REMEMBER

While October brought some frustrating moments for Mersey Valley, including disappointing postponements towards the end of the month, the performances have provided plenty of encouragement.

At the centre of that improvement has been Matthews, whose goals, energy and determination have played a huge part in helping Valley rediscover their confidence.

Individual awards are always special, but they also reflect the hard work and contribution of the teammates around him. James’s success is something the whole squad can take pride in.

Congratulations to James Matthews on a fantastic achievement and a thoroughly deserved October double!

Eight goals, two awards and one very impressive month.
